An Bhfuil Cead Agam Dul Go Dtí An Leithreas? The Nine Words Every Irish Person Knows
An bhfuil cead agam dul go dtí an leithreas?
Nine words. Every Irish person knows them. Every Irish person heard them approximately four hundred times a day for their entire primary school career. The sentence burned into a generation and you can still hear it in your teacher's voice, twenty years later.
May I go to the toilet?
Not "can I go." Not a casual hand gesture toward the door. A full grammatically structured question in Irish, delivered with the urgency of someone who had been holding on since playtime!!
The Most Important Sentence We Ever Learned
Think about it. Before we learned how to introduce ourselves, before we learned the days of the week or the names of the colours, we learned this. Because priorities.
And fair enough. An bhfuil cead agam was survival Irish. The kind you needed immediately and often.
For the linguistically curious, here's what's actually going on:
An bhfuil — is/are (question form)
Cead — permission
Agam — at me (I have)
Dul — to go
Go dtí — to
An leithreas — the toilet
So literally: "Is there permission at me to go to the toilet?" Remarkably polite, when you think about it. The Irish language has a very elegant way of asking for things. We just mostly used it for bathroom breaks.
Now It Lives in Your Bathroom. Where It Belongs.
When I designed this print, I wasn't sure if anyone outside of Ireland would get it. Turns out, that's kind of the point. It gets a laugh from every single Irish person who sees it and a confused look from everyone else, which is honestly part of the fun.
There's something brilliant about hanging a piece of your childhood on the wall. A little nod to national shared trauma, dressed up nicely in a frame.
It's become one of the best-selling prints in the Croí & Co. shop, and honestly it makes me happy every time someone orders it. Somewhere out there, this is hanging in an Irish bathroom, making someone snort laughing while they wash their hands.
The Perfect Gift for Anyone Who Survived Irish School
Birthday, housewarming, or just because if they went to school in Ireland, they'll get it immediately. No explanation needed. That's the beauty of it.
Designed in Ireland. Dispatched within 2–3 days. 💚
